Karla Lane Interview

Karla Lane consistently ranks among the most popular BBW performers on Adult Empire’s pornstar charts. Recently, she’s found herself tackling some of her most nuanced and challenging roles yet, for studios such as Pure Taboo and Adult Time. She chats about all this and more in AE’s new Karla Lane interview!

Tell us how you view body positivity and how it relates to the adult industry.

Body positivity is for everyone. It’s just about embracing the skin you’re in and loving your figure. Not thinking about what others think. All bodies are good bodies. Every body is a sexy body. I think the adult industry has a big part of it. The more diverse types of bodies you see in different media platforms, the more accepting everyone will be.

What are the biggest changes in the industry’s attitude toward body image over your career?

When I started in the industry 14 1/2 years ago, it was pretty open. I was shooting a lot of different things for different companies. Then there was a really strange attitude shift in fashion and porn that really locked out bigger, curvier bodies. We were put on the back burner for a while, and only a few studios were seriously working with us – but we’re back. There are a handful of studios that have consistently shot plus-size and curvy women, but it’s great to see these mainstream-only sites dip their toe into the bbw market and begin to take us seriously. We’re all sexy, able performers and we want to be in films and working like all other models.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about BBW pornstars?

A big misconception is that we don’t make money. Some of the plus-size performers I know are some of the hardest working women in this industry. They’re working every party of the industry – filming, camming, social media. The other misconception is that people don’t buy bbw content. The term “BBW” is largely searched on sites like Manyvids, clips4sale and cam sites. It’s a very popular category that generates money. We’re all just waiting for regular studios to jump in on our trend and start making money with us!

Talk about the foursome scene in The Shape of Beauty. How much of a scene like that is choreographed, and how much is improvised?

We were given a setup for the story and then we were left to do whatever we wanted. That’s what’s nice about working with Bree Mills is that she lets the performers do what they like when performing. It’s more organic and allows us to genuinely enjoy the sex, so it’s not just a staged performance. 

Was the Shape of Beauty scene the first three-BBW group sex scene you’d shot?

It was the first group plus-size scene I had shot for a mainstream company, but there are lots of other group scenes on my website. It is a big deal that they put such a high production value on something that hadn’t been done before on that scale, though, and I’m really honored to have been a part of it. 

Talk about working with Bree Mills and Angela White in The Weight of Infidelity.

It’s been of the highlights of my career so far. The idea of working with the female performer of the year and one of he most celebrated directors in the industry was an honor. The Weight of Infidelity opened the doors to conversations that had never been had about body image in porn. We never talked about the pressures of body image or the acceptance of all sizes of in our industry and this one vignette allowed that discussion to start happening. It put a spotlight on plus-size performers to a wider audience. Angela’s script was so moving and Bree’s direction was very engaging and it helped to make me a better performer. 

What was your reaction to being named 2018 AVN Niche Performer of the Year?

I was so excited and stunned to win 2019 Niche Performer! 2018 was a huge year for me, filming with Angela White and Tommy Pistol for Bree Mills’ The Weight of Infidelity. And it was the first time I took direction in my own project with the AVN-nominated BBW Sex Club series. It was incredible to be recognized for all the effort I put into things I honestly cared about and just loved doing. It was one of the only categories there is such a variety of performers nominated in, so it was an honor to win alongside a group of amazing performers.

What are your recollections about the very first scene you ever shot?

Showing up to someone’s garage for my first boy-girl scene 14 1/2 years ago. Standards were really different back then! 

Can you tell us about the changes you’ve seen over the years in the industry?

The industry is so full of change! It’s in everything, from the technology to how people network and how it’s grown from something people never wanted to talk about to being discussed freely over dinner and featured in television shows. It’s great to see all the growth. Performers also now have more flexibility  to control their income. They don’t have to rely on companies as much. They can  create their own content and generate their own income in their own ways. And shooting for other companies can become that extra cherry on top.

What are some movies that you think best represent you as a performer?

The Weight of Infidelity definitely challenged me as an actress. And working as a director for the first time for my BBW Sex Club series was really different. I had to come up with the concept for the final product. It was a totally new challenge and a new way of thinking for me to work behind the camera.

What’s your go to sex toy?

I’m obsessed with the Satisfyer Luxury! It is amazing! It’s rose gold and pretty, but also works amazingly well.

Tell us about your plans for 2019 and beyond.

I just signed on with ATMLA [Adult Talent Managers LA] for representation because I want the entire industry to know I’m available and eager to work on  a variety of sets. I want to show more directors what plus-size performers can bring – that we’re sexy, fun and  dynamic – and  that the fans love us. And I think joining ATMLA was a great option for growing my personal shoot bookings in 2019. I’m also working more on doing live cam shows and growing my FanCentro and OnlyFans bases, where fans can see exclusive content of my daily life and naughty fun times. 

What’s your advice for women seeking to join the industry?

The adult industry will give you what you put in. You can’t just jump in and expect to get rich quick. Don’t put all  your effort in one place – do lots of things, like camming and phone sex, or whatever works best for your schedule and lifestyle. Be flexible and open to changes because they happen quickly. Don’t let anyone pressure you into things you don’t want to do. And have fun with it! Be sure to buy domains early so they’re all consistent and you have them when you’re ready for them.
