Cybersecurity Trumps Sex?

What would it take for you to give up sex for an entire year?

A briefcase full of cash, perhaps. Or maybe an exciting new career in a dream job. Most of us can probably imagine a prize elusive enough that we’d be willing to stomach celibacy for a year to obtain it. In a new survey from Dashlane Security, 40% of respondents said they’d give up sex for a year if they could be assured of complete cybersecurity. No nookie, but also no hacks, identity theft or breached accounts. It’s interesting to see that so many people would give up one of life’s signature pleasures in exchange for something seemingly so mundane, but it’s an equally interesting reflection on how important e-security has become.

“The nature of online security has changed dramatically. Five to 10 years ago, cybersecurity was about protecting devices with antivirus software. Today, data isn’t on our devices, but in the cloud — and the best line of defense we have to protect this data are passwords,” said Emmanuel Schalit, CEO of Dashlane, in an interview with Digital Trends. Schalit sees carelessness with passwords as one of the big’s security lapses. “This survey data continues to highlight an unfortunate trend — even with breaches happening to everyone from companies and celebrities to consumers, people are continuing to engage in risky password behavior,” he noted.

People also said that the they’d rather give up their favorite food for a month rather than have to reset all their passwords. Sayonara, spaghetti, as long as we don’t have to come up with another combination of capital letters, numbers and special characters that we can actually remember.

The survey result comes in the aftermath of the latest FriendFinder hack, the second such high-profile incident to befall a hookup site in the last 18 months.
