Re: Christy Mack [UPDATED]

I won’t recap what happened to Christy Mack here. There’s enough out there on it. It’s a horrific incident. We still have a very long way to go socially and culturally, and this is yet another reminder.

I feel like it’s worth saying, though, that this is why in my reviews I rail on behavior that we would not socially accept. This. Is. Why. These sorts of things should not be modeled. Assault shouldn’t be a plot device. Gun culture shouldn’t be in every drama feature.

There are all sorts of misogyny, racism, and other social ills that are either portrayed as normal or as funny. I hate it.

Does one cause the other? No. Of course not. Christy was not beaten to a pulp because of the culture portrayed on camera in porn. There is, though, a general culture problem happening here. No one can deny that.

The next time you think of someone flippantly talking about domestic violence or calling someone else their property or anything like that, think that this is very real. Think that this has directly affected someone who has entertained you.

Think about what we can do better in the adult world. There’s a lot.

[UPDATE]:

Christy Mack seems to be on the mend, though from the banter on Twitter, she still seems to have a ways to go. I hope the recovery is quick and smooth for her.

With Christy’s abuser under arrest, there’s been an uptick on sports sites and blogs about the issue. There’s been one consistent theme that bothers me and I suspect bothers a lot of other supporters of the adult industry: that an adult career is still a detraction somehow.

Comments start with “I know she’s a porn star, but…”

Then the explanation that either because or despite she’s a porn star, she did/didn’t deserve this to happen. That working in porn is a damning indictment of personality is perhaps not shocking, but I had hoped we had gotten further than that.

Which brings me to Belle Knox. Remember how her being outed at school was a big deal? Remember how she was worried about the reaction? She has every right to worry. We should all worry, in fact, until none of us are pre-judged by our industry.

I love that I’ve worked on the periphery of the adult industry for fifteen years. I’d like to do more, honestly. But that there are people who assign at least shame and at the most scorn and blame on the porn stars we enjoy is precisely why we need to be more mainstream.

Are any of you ashamed to be here, reading this? To be purchasing something today? To follow your favourites on Twitter and the like?

I’m not. But that’s easy with a pseudonym, no?
