What is “free use”?
By mutual agreement, one or both partners allow themselves to be acted upon sexually at any time, completely at the other person’s whims. Sexual encounters may begin at random moments, without introduction, and in the midst of other tasks or activities. A typical “free use” scenario might find someone abruptly initiating sex while a partner is cleaning the house or cooking dinner.
“This idea of agreeing to almost never say no — of being transformed into an object to be used however someone pleases — is what drives the kink for some,” VICE’s Magadelene Taylor said in 2023 overview of the fetish. Like many fetishes, free use is an outgrowth of the basic submissive/dominant dynamics of BDSM.
“I think the growing stress of everyday life plays a role in this fantasy for a lot of people,” a free use Redditor named Vixen explained to Mel Magazine in 2021. “As you get older and you have more responsibilities, sadly, you do have less of a sex life. Add to that the whole death and dying in a pandemic thing, and you can see the appeal of wanting something that’s just effortless and physically gratifying.”
As the genre has developed, it expanded beyond its origins as a fetish practiced by adventurous couples. Some porn movies now take place in a “free use universe,” where the “sex at any time” concept applies broadly in places like the workplace. “We can have a regular conversation, and without reaction from me or you, I whip my dick out, I start having sex, and everyone’s just normal about it,” explained Peter Green, star of Team Skeet’s free use adventure Shoot Your Shot.
When did free use originate?
According to sources such as Vice, Mel Magazine, Metro, and Know Your Meme, the theme began to gain prominence around 2014, when it first became a thread on Reddit. Popular TikTok accounts and videos helped spread the word, and within a few years porn began releasing free use-themed content.
When did free use become a porn theme?
Porn clips with a free-use feel existed before the genre gained a name.
