Ryan Keely Interview: ‘Humor in Porn Is Necessary’
Ryan Keely was once asked what she liked to do for fun. Her answer was classic, killer Keely: “read, cook, and fuck.” In a way, this sums up a lot of what is wonderful about this veteran star, including her hilarious wit, her stupendous sex drive, and her fierce intelligence. We’ve been fans of Keely since her earliest days in the industry, when Adult Empire was still Adult DVD Empire. In this special Empire Days blog interview, Keely discusses her very first shoot, her sense of humor, the MILF/stepmom genre, her memories of Adult Empire, and more.
What are your memories of the very first porn scene you ever shot?
I shot my first scene for a site called CD Girls. I did two solos and then Charlie Laine walked me through my first Sybian ride. I’ve included a couple of photos for people to see my evolution. It was shot by Nate Liquor who I had been working for as a PA on sets for VCA and Zero Tolerance so I felt very comfortable stripping down for the first time. I actually have the full photoset on my OF for those who are curious.
What is the most surprising change you’ve seen in the industry since your debut?
The content got more creative. Sure, some scenes for mainstream companies are clearly driven by big data and can be iterative and redundant. But I spend more time shooting for my fansite. Because it’s my own site and I produce everything, everything except the customs are a reflection of my creative vision. Most recently I shot a Moose vs Mountie themed scene for Canadian Thanksgiving and a messy Oktoberfest scene.
Director and podcaster Holly Randall once described you as a “naturally hilarious person.” Which movies or scenes have best allowed you to highlight your humorous side?
Being called funny is the greatest compliment. It’s the hardest thing to be and my number one goal. I try to make anything I’m in funny if the content calls for it. I love shooting for Mike Quasar because he lets me bring the camp. Porn as a genre has lots of opportunities to add jokes and physical humor.
A great showcase of my comedy stylings is the collection of scenes I shot for Mylf of the Month in June. We did a porn parody of Monster in Law with me in the Jane Fonda role.
In general, how do you view the role of humor in porn?
Humor in porn is necessary because sex is funny and awkward. Jokes can break the ice both on set and in real life.
What were the biggest things you learned about yourself during your porn hiatus?
I learned that I didn’t have to do porn to earn a living, but that I preferred it. Working at a new media startup and then as an esthetician proved that I can be successful in other areas, but I felt more exploited outside the industry than in it. But I do miss having my employer pay for healthcare.
What do you enjoy most (and least) about the stepmom/MILF genre of porn?
I love the lingerie that MILFs wear, whoever came up with the rule that MILFs wear stockings was SMART.
I am a little tired of only getting to have sex with young and/or new performers. I feel like I’m always tossing around these lady and boy twinks. Having sex with someone who’s a peer, where I’m not always controlling the scenes, is a welcome change of pace when it happens.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from a porn director?
It wasn’t from a director. It was from another model. The Penthouse Pet Jayden Cole told me before my first AVN as a model that I shouldn’t let anyone take a picture of my feet for less than $20.
What advice would you give someone looking to get their start in the industry?
Same as what Jayden told me. “Don’t let anyone take pictures of your feet for less than $20.” Also, that your contract with your agent is unenforceable so you can leave them if you don’t like the types of scenes they are booking you for. And you don’t need more than three pairs of shoes for your model bag: two pairs of heels, one nude and one black; and a pair of white Keds style canvas sneakers. You can get them at Target or even Michaels for $10. ALSO, don’t rush out and spend a bunch of time and money if you don’t have the exact wardrobe production asked for. If it’s that important to the scene, they can purchase that themselves. A couple of matching bra and panty sets, the aforementioned shoes, and a couple of tops and skirts in bright solid colors is more than enough to get started.
What was the highest bid you’ve received for your clothing that you’ve periodically auctioned?
I’ve had more than a few auctions close around $500. Latex outfits do well, as do my Honey Birdette sets with stockings. Those seem to get the highest bids. I’m always shooting so I always have new auctions listed at https://sweeky.com/ryankeely/ !
Last year, you appeared on the cover of a book from photographer Dave Naz. Tell us a little bit more about that!
I worked with Dave Naz very early in my career, before I modeled. He was one of the people that I worked as an on-set assistant for. So when I started modeling it was natural that I would pose for him. We got some beautiful sets that ended up in Leg Show magazine and I think an art show. We had lost touch so I was thrilled to find out that I had been selected as the cover model for his new book and that he wanted to see if I would pose again. I’m including a few images from that sitting. So much has changed over the years, and that makes it really special to work with him again.
You’ve described yourself as a hardcore news junkie. What are your favorite news resources? Similarly, what podcasts do you enjoy?
Podcasts are my largest news source by a wide margin. I listen to at least two hours of podcasts a day, but listening to 6-8 hours is not uncommon. My News podcasts are BBC News, Global News Podcast, Marketplace, NPR Up First, Air Mail Morning Meeting, Business of Home, and Pod Save America. I also subscribe to the Wall Street Journal and New York Magazine, which I read on my phone.
But I love all types of podcasts. My favorite podcast is Game of Roses from the people who wrote How to Win the Bachelor. I don’t watch like at all, ever. Now I religiously watch the Bachelor shows because that podcast is so delightful. Other favs are You Must Remember This, If Books Could Kill, You’re Wrong About and my very very very favorite, Articles of Interest with Avery Trufleman.
What does a typical day look like for you?
The only thing consistent is my sleep schedule . . . unless I’m working for someone other than myself, and that is I sleep from 4 a.m. – 11 a.m. I fought it for years, but even as a little, little kid that’s my body’s natural rhythm. I like to do computer work late at night, usually 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. From 2 a.m. – 4 a.m. I do my wind down routine which involves tidying the house, pulling out whatever outfits I’ll need for the next day, a long shower or bath, and reading or playing Stardew Valley on my switch until I fall asleep.
I wake up around 11 and do emails and texts on my phone until my social media person arrives around noon. That’s my signal to get out of bed and either start my fitness routine or glam. Sometimes I’ll do calls at this time too. I try to finish whatever needs to be shot by 4pm so she can leave at a reasonable time.
When she goes home, I veg out hard for a few hours, and then around 9 or 10 pm, I’ll remotivate and clean, laundry, and life admin before sitting down at my computer to finish anything that needs to be done from midnight to 2am.
Of course if I have an appt, a shoot, or an errand, then everything gets rearranged.
Currently, what are your favorite TV shows, movies, music, books, etc.
I just subscribed to Architectural Digest which I am so excited about, and I’ve always got a few romance novels scattered around. I’ll watch a little wrestling or Alone if I have friends over. Sometimes fashion shows on Youtube or a documentary. Just got the new Taschen book on the work of Tom of Finland, but I’m just looking at the pictures. The very sexy pictures of big thick cocks. Yum.

I am putting out new content daily. My OnlyFans is where you will find the sexy stuff. I actually have three TikTok accounts because you never know when the TOS will change or if a couple of the sounds you’ve used will get banned. One of them has the content that shows off my personality a bit more, with interviews and collaborations and our various original series. What are your recollections and interactions with Adult Empire/Adult DVD Empire over the years?
They have ALL, literally everything I have ever done in ever in one place. I regularly use it as a resource to look up scene information or to see if something I’ve shot came out. I appreciate the review more than anything. Sometimes I’ll film something and if it doesn’t really get much fanfare, it can be depressing. Reading the in-depth reviews on this site lets me know that my work has been seen and almost always appreciated.
In a perfect world, where would you like to be in 25 years?
On my own yacht. Maybe recreating Goldie Hawn’s looks from Overboard. Dating models.
