Bloomer Yang Interview: Stand-Up Comedian & Porn Director
Bloomer Yang will permanently banish all your stereotypical images of the average porn director. Most people envision someone akin to the Jack Horner character in Boogie Nights, a mustachioed slickster with an eccentric mix of charm and leer. Stand-up comedian Yang (aka Oliver Wong) is about as far afield from Horner as anyone imaginable, yet he has evolved into one of the industry’s most creative director/writers. His inspirations run the gamut from Erika Lust to The Office to Gone Girl, giving him a knack for creating quirky, relatable characters. Go inside the mind of Delphine Films‘ in-house director in this new AE interview!
Delphine recently tweeted, “If your life was a porn movie… What would be the title?” What is your own answer to that question?
My title will be “Witty Cumdump.” “Witty” because I am a stand-up comedian. “Cumdump” because I am one. I like the contrast between “witty” and “cumdump.” These two words definitely do not belong together.
Tell us a little bit about your background. How did you first encounter porn, and how did your attitude toward it evolve over the years?
I think I watched porn for the first time when I was like 11-ish. I can’t remember. It was some sort of straight porn stored on my dad’s computer. From the age of 11 to 28 (I’m now 31), I have always watched porn, but I always felt like I was wasting my time watching porn. I felt guilty. But since I got into porn as an adult film director, I began to think of porn as a form of self-pleasure and stopped being guilty.
How did you get into the industry?
In 2021, I got into the industry through a friend’s referral. I said yes without hesitation. I’m weird like that. I take whatever life gives me without overthinking it. I was like, “Oh, there is an opportunity for me to do a job many people find mysterious! I’m going to take it!” I even thought I could finally get to use my degree in film production.
What are some of your biggest stylistic inspirations?
I watched a lot of Erika Lust’s scenes for inspiration. I also watch mainstream content for inspiration. It just depends on the day. I can re-watching The Office if I am writing comedy. I can be watching Gone Girl if I’m writing a drama-thriller.
Is there a particular Delphine movie that you think best captures your filmmaking philosophy?
That’s a very interesting question. The recent comedy series Hang In There, Abigail, captures my filmmaking philosophy. They say, “Make the movie you want to watch,” and I really want to watch Hang In There, Abigail, a comedy featuring a stand-up comedian as the lead actress. And if you think about it, there aren’t many female stand-up comedian characters in porn.
Tell us about your love for comedy.
Comedy is one of those things I’ll keep doing until my last dying breath. I love making people laugh. I love the dopamine hit when I make people laugh. There is something about knowing that you can make people laugh that’s addictive.
What lesson that you’ve learned in the world of standup comedy have been most useful as a porn filmmaker?
Don’t be afraid to try new things. As a stand-up comedian, I have to keep trying new jokes, sets, or venues, which helps me try new things in all areas of my life, including being a porn filmmaker. I keep trying different genres and narrative styles in my films and enjoy the process of discovering and innovating very much.
Name some of the most surprising or unexpected challenges you’ve encountered making an adult movie.
The indoor temperature! I didn’t anticipate achieving a comfortable indoor temperature would be crucial in shooting sex scenes. Too hot? Talents can’t perform. Too cold? Talents don’t want to strip. Other than that, all the other challenges are pretty much expected since I had experience in filmmaking before.
Talk a little bit about your podcast (Get Intimate).
Get Intimate with Oliver Wong is a podcast I started in 2011 and took a hiatus in 2022, but now I am bringing it back in 2023 with a co-host Teresa Lo, a writer for Hustler, and of course, a new name. Teresa and I are good friends. On Sex & Boba, we both work in the adult industry, which makes it better for us to host a podcast together. We talk about sex, lifestyle, comedy, and being Asian. It’s a hilarious and honest podcast.
Delphine’s official Twitter account jokes that “We are part of your search history, don’t lie.” Why do you think people often are still so uncomfortable with the sexual side of themselves?
I think it’s because people are ashamed. People fear losing jobs, friends, and relationships when they disclose they watch porn. However, this fear may be founded on nothing more than imagination. Most of the time, people don’t care if you watch porn or not because I think people just assume you do. It’s a matter of when and how to bring it up.
What do you consider the best part of writing and directing for adult films?
The best part is to get the paycheck! The second best part is to see the script I wrote being transformed into a finished product and presenting it to the audience. Finally, the third best part is to receive positive feedback from the audience.
We saw on Twitter you are a boba tea lover. What’s your usual tea order?
Black tea without sugar and light ice!
What projects are you working on currently?
I’m currently working on an adult series that will be shot in June. It’s about a bunch of rich people going on a vacation in a big mansion who have a falling out. It will be in the vein of The Office and Parks & Recreation!
