‘Poetics for Tramps’: Adult Empire Porn Movie of the Year 2022

Poetics for Tramps is an improbable project and an even more improbable number one bestseller. It compiles four highly artistic short films, mostly inspired by the poetry and prose of writers like Sharon Olds and Jack Gilbert. The erotic aspects are spectacular, to be sure, but the tone is never one of pure sexual catharsis. Tramps challenges you to consider its deeper meanings long after the movie has ended. Porn art has often proved to be a tricky business proposition, but Tramps defied the odds as a durable hit. It snagged the top ranking on Adult Empire’s VOD and DVD charts alike, a relative rarity in an age when bestsellers come and go. Perhaps it’s because director Kayden Kross never patronizes her audience. The literary references in Tramps, including Gilbert and Olds, are thoughtful and challenging. You’ll likely delight in their presence if you’re familiar with them, and you’ll be inspired to check them out if you’re not.

Deeper contract star Maitland Ward brings passion and power to “At Last,” a melancholy, reflective tale about a woman desperately seeking to atone for a past (unnamed) sin. Though obviously a woman of wealth, Ward’s character seeks out a humble street walker (Oliver Flynn) for physical companionship. He stays at her home, playing by her rules, seemingly content to be a silent foil to Ward’s age-old pains. Eventually, Maitland demands that Oliver lash her with a whip as punishment for the unknown transgression. Ward’s performance is seldom more powerful than it is here, as she contorts her face into a visage of both anger and supplication. The dynamic continues through the fiery, hungry sex.

“Women’s Work” puts Gabbie Carter into the dreary, predictable routines of housewifery. When she realizes husband Oliver Flynn is about to lose his job, she springs into action to influence the unsuspecting boss (Michael Stefano). In other hands, this scenario could have been an entirely conventional porn plot, but Kross laces the entire affair with mordant wit, poetic excerpts, and a creeping sense of existential dread. All the while, the eroticism doesn’t dim one iota, as the dalliance with Michael turns into a threesome once Oliver realizes what’s going on. After both men splatter their loads on Gabbie’s breasts and face, Michael scurries off into the night while Oliver attempts to compute what just happened. We soon realize that Gabbie clearly wasn’t so powerless as she seemed.

“Chaired” displays a feast of sexual delights as sumptuous as the ripe fruits that provide much of the scene’s visual color. We watch as an array of beauties nibble at fruit and pluck at a violin, as if in a museum depiction by a master artist. Indeed, there is a painterly quality to the visual motives and poses here, particularly in the establishing shots. Oliver Flynn watches the scene from a remove, in an interesting rhyme with his initial detachment in scene one (“At Last”). Eventually, the assembled women (including Mona Wales, perfectly cast as an almost god-like mother character) pounce on his tender flesh.

The movie’s final sequence is artistic dramatization of the Sharon Olds poem “Sex Without Love.” It continues the feasting motif from scene three, albeit in a contemporary context. A who’s who of pornstars, including Angela White and a returning Maitland Ward, assemble for a swank dinner party. The evening’s repast will satisfy only a small sliver of their hunger, though. A thrilling orgy tames their ravenous sexual cravings, as Jessie Saint marvels at their ability to enjoy sex without emotional attachments.

At a casual glance, Kayden Kross’s directorial style indicates a certain detachment of its own. There’s a whiff of the great Stanley Kubrick in the clinical precision of her artistry. But Kross also channels one of Kubrick’s most famous observations about life: “However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.” This light showed its way to Adult Empire’s 2022 Movie of the Year.
