Shay Sights: The Silver Anniversary Interview
Adult Empire is marking 25 years in the business, but we’re not the only ones! Shay Sights is also celebrating a quarter century since her porn debut. Take a trip through porno history with this new Shay Sights interview!
Tell us how you got your start in the industry.
I was feature dancing in Toronto and bumped in to Dyanna Lauren who was up there signing for Vivid. We became fast friends and she told me when I get to LA to look her up. She was on contract for Vivid and just started directing their very first DVD line at the switch from VHS to DVD. I did their first one.
When you think 1997 or late ‘90s in general, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?
Big feature productions with high production value from creative visionaries like Michael Ninn, long days on set, and big hair.
What do you most miss about the way the industry was when you began your career?
Talent was all set and waiting to do our scenes so we had a community and got to hang out with each other until our scene was up. I miss seeing everyone and spending time with my porn family.
I also miss the way the AVN show was at The Venetian during CES with a line from the convention center to the casino just to get in. I hear they’re having it during CES and at a new location in 2023 so I’m very excited to go!
Similarly, is there anything about those early days that you don’t miss at all?
I don’t miss the extremely long days in many cases. There were a couple of features I was on set for 18-24 hours for and literally set up a little bed with blankets on set to nap.
I also shot twice in Toronto as I was scouted up there dancing before coming to LA. Devil’s [Film] was doing a line called The Great Canadian Stripper Search which was my first movie.
What was the most valuable piece of advice you’ve received during your career?
Never sell your costumes (feature dancing) and never publicly announce your retirement. It might just be burn out and you need time off. I failed miserably as here I am after ten years away, but that’s an entirely different story lol. It’s still very good advice, though.
What technological innovation has most changed the industry during your time as a pornstar?
The internet…moving from DVDs to online companies and of course online platforms for content creators to create their own content.
Do you re-watch your own work?
I do if it was one of the big features because they were so beautiful. I also used to watch my scenes in the beginning to help me get my angles right but now that’s second nature.
How has your performance style changed over the years?
It’s changed because the industry has changed. A lot of the MILF and taboo scenes are softer and more nurturing so I’m having fun with that. I do still haul off when I’m able to, especially with my own content, because I do have an extremely filthy mouth and deep throating, sloppy BJs and being choked are kind of my thing. I’m a product of the ’90s . . . what can I say? 😉
What did you learn about yourself during your hiatus from porn?
That I’m capable of running multiple businesses successfully and that I missed the amazing, funny, open and unconditionally loving people in the adult industry.
What does a typical day look like for you?
The first couple of hours start with tea and meditation by the koi pond and I visualize and create my day. I then spend time online chatting with members on my fan site and posting on social media. I chat back and forth while doing property management. I have several air BNBs that I self -manage and are quite a bit of work. I continue chatting with fans throughout the day between seeing clients for holistic healing when I have them scheduled. I’ve been doing energy healing for about 25 years as well and it’s the foundation of everything I’m about. I work out around noon either with a kickboxing trainer or in the gym probably five days a week. I’m basically online with fans on and off whenever I’m able to be until I go to bed. These days I also shoot content and am on set so I’m definitely a busy little beaver (Canadian joke).😃
Your Twitter bio says you are an energy healer – can you explain more about that?
I started studying metaphysics and quantum physics in my early 20s. I started feeling warm energy flowing in my hands about that time as well. I went looking for guidance and quickly found it at The Berkeley Psychic Institute and started studying the healing arts. I took my Reiki Master in the beginning and then moved in to different modalities of healing and energy medicine. At this point, I’ve probably done several thousand hours of education and sessions and am still learning every day. I’m fascinated by what some of the greatest minds in the world have been able to prove on a subatomic level because it scientifically proves that everything I’ve ever felt is on point. I do a lot of CranioSacral Therapy and Sound Healing (crystal and gemstone bowls, Tibetan bowls and tuning forks) these days.
Tell us about your garden and bee hives!
My garden is my sanctuary and I’ve spent several years creating my own little oasis where I grow just about everything. I’ve got several raised beds with kale, collards and chard right now and of course lots of different heirloom tomatoes. I’m a big cold press juice person so I juice from my garden daily when I’m in town. There are lots of fruit trees . . . lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit, pomegranate, avacado, fig, apples and nectarines. I’ve got banana trees lining the walls so I get several huge bundles of bananas a year I can freeze for smoothies. I’ve got passion fruit vines all over as well.
There’s are 3 bee hives for pollination and I get about 100 pounds of honey a year!
I’ve also got a large chicken coop and 12 laying hens so I have fresh organic eggs daily.
I also enjoy water gardening so I have three koi ponds and quite a few lotus and water lilies.
Currently, what are your favorite TV shows, music, movies, books, etc.?
I like to read anything about quantum physics and law of attraction.
I have a pretty eclectic playlist and listen to pretty much everything. Right now I’m in to the Iration and Emancipator stations on Pandora. Happy, upbeat and chill music wise.
TV shows . . . Peeky Blinders, Ozarks, Stranger Things, Obiwan and my guilty pleasure is anything vampire-related.
Tell your fans what they can look forward to seeing from you in the near future.
Lots of new scenes for all of their favorite companies and lots of new content on my fan page. I’m also getting in to learning more about Crypto and am involved in several nft projects that involve something unique and tangible when purchased.
In a perfect world, where would you like to be in 25 years?
I’m currently working on that right now…it involves running my air bnbs from a white sandy tropical beach.😉
