Kay Brandt’s hit streak continues! After scoring last year’s top-ranked movie with 40 Years Old, Comes to Life, she comes close to repeating the accomplishment with second-ranked Sugar and Spice. In the grand tradition of movies such as Like Water For Chocolate, Sugar and Spice exploits the delectable connections between food and sex. The opening foursome is certainly spectacular, but the remaining four scenes offer subtle pleasures just as rewarding.

The series is now as established and popular as Blacked itself, as this bestselling 40th volume demonstrates. Each scene focuses on a “family swap” scenario, wherein families temporarily exchange moms, dads, brothers, and/or sisters for a member of another family. (Ostensibly, this is a social exercise akin to a “exchange student” program, but in this context, it quickly devolves into a sex bacchanale.) It’s an effective way of maintaining the naughty fauxcest concept without resorting to genre’s most prevalent cliches. Where else might you find a family puzzle-assembling session turn into a dick-comparing contest? Or Charles Dera, clad like a prison escapee from a 1930s slapstick comedy, gleefully seducing his “exchange” daughter?
