The Story Behind Mario Salieri’s Epic ‘Li Ciociara’ (Interview + Documentary)

Only a special director and special movie can turn disparate elements like a historical tragedy, an Oscar-winning movie, and a classic novel into an erotic epic for the ages. In some ways, La Ciociara is a project that defies description. It has all the sensual splendor audiences expect in a porn movie, but it also has the ambitious aspirations of auteur cinema.

Directed by noted filmmaker Mario Salieri, La Ciociara chronicles an Italian World War II drama involving a woman, her daughter, and their entanglement and escape from invading armies. The material was the subject of a book by Alberto Moravia and a movie by Italian neorealist director Vittorio de Sica. (The latter is notable for earning film legend Sophia Loren an Oscar in 1961.)  Due to the graphic nature of some of the original story’s plot points, the Salieri project engendered controversy in the Italian press. Its intriguing path from historical event to porn blockbuster is chronicled in a new documentary. Watch it here!

Mario Salieri interview

Director Salieri, a 30-year filmmaking veteran who has tackled topics as diverse as Dracula and Faust, provides a fuller picture of his vision in this new interview.

How would you describe your own personal filmmaking philosophy?

My work is mainly based on the construction of eroticism through a narrative structure. This philosophy is not appreciated by the new generations who do not know eroticism, so my movies are dedicated to people of mature age and a demanding audience, a small niche that still includes several fans of the genre.

What was the origin of your version of La Ciociara?

From a young age I was a great lover of cinema and some important Italian directors influenced my professional formation. Vittorio de Sica, author of the first film version of the novel La Ciociara, written by Alberto Moravia, was my mentor and inspired the realization of my work.

How did you approach the challenge of adapting the original story into a porn script? To what extent did you draw stylistic inspiration from the previous film versions of the story?

First of all, I read Alberto Moravia’s novel many times, trying to forget the cinematographic versions of Vittorio De Sica and Dino Risi.

My movie imagines that Alberto Moravia was a direct protagonist of the story with his wife Elsa Morante (and this is not to be excluded even in reality) and the plot develops during the writing of the novel. Let’s not forget that Alberto Moravia often explored the themes of sexuality, social alienation, and existentialism in his works, so it wasn’t difficult to build erotic emotions on his novel.

Talk about the casting process for the movie.

Casting is one of the most difficult steps in making my movies. Until the 1990s it was possible to find motivated actors and actresses who viewed porn as a profession. Many of them were willing to learn scripts, be directed to the set and learn the art of acting. Today the porn actresses (not all) arrive on set looking at the clock to try to do everything in the shortest possible time. This happens because for many of them (not all), porn is only useful to promote the job of escort, much more economically advantageous. Many porn actors (not all) achieve an erection using Caverjet injections or by ingesting massive doses of Viagra or Kamagra. Possessed by the effect of the drugs they work without expression and with a limited time erection. Furthermore, today’s actors and actresses are no longer used to being handled by a director on set. In the age of the internet, the professional figure of the director is no longer necessary in porn because it has been replaced by cameramen who have learned how to film five or six pornographic positions and some stupid comedy introductions, such as the student who seduces the teacher, the stepdaughter the godfather, mother, daughter’s boyfriend, etc. So the selection of my cast is very difficult and limited and to give credibility to the story of the movies I am forced to use many actors and actresses from the cinema and traditional theater.

Did you expect to encounter controversy when you decided to make La Ciociara? What was your reaction when controversy erupted?

All my movies are politically incorrect and create controversy but La Ciociara has exceeded all expectations. As everyone will be able to see from the documentary La Ciociara that your website can offer free for viewing [see above], the scandal in Italy was enormous, and it is incredible that it started even before the release of the movie.

Senator Maria Spilabotte has even brought the controversy to the senate of the republic and all the Italian neo-fascist movements have moved to execute Mario Salieri. Of course, this only favored the promotion of the movie which became a blockbuster in Europe.

How long was the production schedule for La Ciociara?

The movie La Ciociara took about three months of preparation (synopsis, script, casting, identification of locations, costumes and vintage vehicles) ten days of production and about a month for editing, dubbing and original soundtrack.

What was the most difficult aspect of shooting La Ciociara?

The hardest part was making a believable story in just ten days of production, changing sets very often. In reality, considering the various set changes that sometimes required trips of hundreds of kilometers, the production days would have been six or seven, which are very few to make 201 minutes of movie with this quality.

Are there any specific scenes or moments in the movie you are particularly proud of?

In the final part of the movie (third part) me and the two leading actresses of the movie go to offer tribute to the monument of the Ciociara mother in Castro dei Volsci, built to pay homage to all the women raped and killed in Ciociaria with the arrival of the allied troops in May 1944. That was a very emotional moment.

What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in the adult industry since your career began?

Everything changed. First of all, the market. With home video there were international sales networks made up of agents and dealers, we met, discussed and together we established company policies. Audiovisual piracy existed but it was very easy to keep it under control. The advent of the internet represented a great opportunity but unfortunately the market is dominated by uncontrollable piracy. Almost all the old and historic production companies and directors have disappeared, replaced by young and rampant internet-savvy entrepreneurs, who often don’t understand anything about pornography. The big American paid porn sites on the internet convey their traffic from the tubes, which they manage themselves. Tubes, protected by the fact that users upload the videos, are large containers of piracy and I have many good reasons to believe that videos are uploaded not by users, but by people paid to do so. I believe that the problem of tubes must be addressed with great attention by international legislators because in addition to representing free access to pornography for minors without any filter, it is also a container for piracy and pornographic scenes with child.

Then there is livejasmin and all the other sites run by porn video chats, whose owners have openly stated that they want to annihilate audiovisual pornography. How do they want to do it? Simple, offering free audiovisual pornography through tubes. This kills all the producers and leaves only those who generate traffic from the tubes, which they often own, too.

Of all the movies you’ve shot, which ones do you think best represent your style as a filmmaker?

Always the last.

Tell us about some of your upcoming projects and plans.

La ciociara is a 2016 production, after which I made many other movies that will soon also arrive on your website. As for the future, everything is still to be written.
