‘Director Holly Randall on “Faking It” in Porn’ (VIDEO)
When you watch a porn movie, you’re seeing a finished, edited product. You don’t see all the footage that ends up on the cutting-room floor . . . or the hidden tension between the two leading actors! Having seen and shot it all, porn director Holly Randall knows how tricky it can be when two porn performers don’t have the natural chemistry needed for a great scene. In this clip from our 2019 interview with Randall, she chats about this difficulty of being a porn director.

Dallas: In instances where you’ve had to shoot two performers where it wasn’t necessarily absolutely what they preferred [in terms of scene partner], was there any trick to kind of capturing something that’s not there? Or does that happen in the editing room? What’s the behind-the-scenes story there where the chemistry isn’t there as potently?
Holly Randall: I had one of those scenes last week, week before. Yeah, I would probably say a lot in the editing. If you watched the raw footage, you’d probably be like [mock gasps]. Yeah, it was difficult. The girl was not into the guy, and I actually had to ask her if she could maybe pretend to like the guy a little bit more. I was like, “You’re a great actress! Let’s bring out those acting skills. Let’s pretend like you’re into this.” And actually the worst part was before the sex and during the sex stills. Because they don’t really have to act so much. But once the video started rolling, they were good, so I think when it’s edited, you won’t be able to tell. But yeah, those are tricky! Those are really tricky. And fortunately, I don’t come across that too often, but it definitely happens. And a lot of it just comes down to the girl just needing to pretend she’s into. This will be over! The sooner that you pretend you’re into this scene, the sooner we’ll wrap this up, and the sooner we can all go home.
