Catching Up With . . . Karla Lane
We’ve interviewed the enthusiastic, energetic Karla Lane several times over the years: an audio podcast, a sitdown and game session at AVN, a written Q&A, and more. We’re always impressed by her up-tempo demeanor and pure love of life! That’s why it was a delight to chat with her once again for an update on what she’s been up to in the crazy year that’s been 2020.
In your last interview with us you were at the 14-and-a-half year mark, and you had already seen many changes during that time in the industry. What has the crazy year of 2020 been like for you as a person, as a performer, and inside the industry as a whole?
It’s been so different this year! January started with me being inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame and then quickly followed with COVID strongly impacting the entire industry. I’ve had to make a lot of shifts in how I both live and perform, but it’s actually led to some amazing changes.
Your IAFD listing indicates you have no tattoos. Is there a particular you have never indulged in that popular trend?
I actually have two! A small heart on my rib cage for the Dodgers and an “invisible ink” tattoo on my inner wrist.
Do you have a fellow adult performer that you have been craving to work with but have not had the opportunity to work with yet?
I’d love to work with Abigail Mac! She’s so much fun!
Are the anal specialty films harder to perform in or more desired?
Anal is definitely very desired by fans. Not everyone shoots anal for different reasons. It comes with its own challenges, but being prepared and having a good scene partner always makes it easier and more fun.
Has being in your thirties changed your view or enjoyment of the adult business at all?
I still enjoy it just as much as when I started. But I’m definitely more career and business-minded now. When I started at 18, I was willing to shoot just about anything – the more the better! I’m at a different stage in my career where I’m working with people I absolutely adore, doing the things I love and focusing more on myself and my goals.
Do you like to date within fellow members of the industry or do you look outside for dating?
I typically look outside the industry. It was just by chance Mo and I happened to meet and get together. But all my other partners are out of the industry.
What is your most memorable fan experience?
AVN 3 years ago, a fan tweeted “if you pass through my town, I work at this gas station and you should stop!” So Mo and I just stopped by and surprised him and chatted with him for a little bit.
What is the best invention in relation to porn that you have seen during your career?
Sites like OnlyFans and AVNStars are so great for allowing us to monetize everything we do and to really be in touch with our fans. I can share any and every part of my life with people who genuinely want to support me and my work.
On Twitter, you mentioned you were taking a road trip and had plans to fancy up the minivan. Have renovations started on that yet? Where are you planning to travel?
We are on a multi-state vacation and it’s amazing! We fully outfitted the van for sleeping, cooking and other basic needs. It’s been a lot of fun exploring the PNW and sleeping out in the wild.
Talk to us about social media – love it or hate it and why?
That’s a mix! It’s a great way to network and share information. But difficult finding the balance between social media and real life at times.
Scrolling through your social media we see a lot of posts about coffee – what’s your typical coffee order?
Whatever the season special is at the time.
When we chatted with you at the 2020 AVN Awards, we challenged you to play the classic video game Street Fighter 2. What games have you been playing during your down time?
Candy Crush! It’s all I really play.
Talk to us about the impacts that COVID-19 has on the adult industry. What changes do you expect to see on set/how you interact with other performers?
It really has impacted everything from how we test with added COVID testing to having fewer people working on set. Everyone wearing masks and being fully prepared is key. Communication is more important now than ever.
What did you do during quarantine? What did you look forward to most once things started to open back up?
I started a huge victory garden and began growing all my own food. It allowed me to avoid shopping out more and gave me a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to eat. I also worked more on filming solo content and finding new ways to engage my fans online. I was really most excited to go out for proper sushi!
Of your recently released scenes and movies, which ones stand out as your favorites?
It would be my first solo for Adult Time. I got to create the plot, direct it and Mo was my camera person. We were deep in Covid and it was a different experience.
Do you have a porn role model?
Angela White! I often ask myself “What would Angela White do?” when I encounter different work and regular life situations. She’s so professional and a real example of the type of person I want to be. [White and Lane co-starred in The Weight of Infidelity]
What TV shows, movies, and/or music have you been loving lately?
Ratched was great! On the drive during our van vacation, we stopped by the motel where it was filmed. I’m in a classic country music mode with my van life tour.
Talk about working with director Bree Mills.
She brings an inspirational creativity to set. It was a lot of fun working with her.
In your Twitter bio, you mention, “It’s PLUS SIZE not BBW. I’m more than a search term.” Tell us a little about your perspectives on porn terminology.
I’m all about body inclusivity and want people to know that every body type needs to be represented more broadly in the industry. Mainstream everything — movies, music, clothing — refers to it as plus size and it’s time for the adult industry to jump on board.
Tell us about your upcoming projects.
Currently driving through several states in a minivan with my boyfriend Mo and filming our adventures. Working on different types of content for my platforms. I’m really enjoying working on my OnlyFans and looking forward to getting back to working on more mainstream sets in the future.
