Side Effects IV
Take a close look at the expression of astonishment and shock that Megan Rain is wearing on the cover of Side Effects IV. As the scene unwinds, your jaw is likely to drop in a similar fashion. Rain plays a woman who is about to undergo a breast-enhancement operation. She’s nervous about the procedure, and the slightly off-kilter manner of her doctors does little to alleviate the tension. Part of the surgery involves a dose of testosterone, and when the needle plunges, the overeager Rain insists that she get a full syringe of the goods. “I want to make sure it takes!” she insists. Boy, does it ever. Rain writhes and gasps. Lights flash, as if imported from a Frankenstein movie. And then voila, it’s revealed that Rain’s overdose has made her grow a penis! (Yes, you read that correctly.) She is flabbergasted and confused by the new feelings this thick dick generates. Perhaps nurse Adriana Chechik will be able to help her out? With its unsettling tone (right down to the anxiety-provoking music), the sequence feels like a David Cronenberg “body horror” movie that’s gone off in a purely pornographic direction.

The Path to Forgiveness
Religion can be a powerful force for good in a person’s life, lending direction and focus in a way that earthbound goals often do not. On the flip side, religious cults can also have a debilitating effect on a person’s capacity to function normally, particularly when it comes to sex. Cadence Lux knows the feeling! As Path to Forgiveness opens, she finds herself involuntarily enmeshed with a religious cult that frowns upon any indulgences of the flesh. Naturally, there are loads of people violating those regulations, even after being upbraided by an imperious elder (Joanna Angel, uttering each of her lines with flamboyant relish). Director Whitney Wright finds plenty of lesbian sin to focus in on, with strong performances from Lux and Kenzie Reeves. (Poor Kenzie! We’re continually amazed to see how many porn movies she appears in, including this one, that require her to cry on camera. At this point, she really is becoming porn’s answer to Shelley Duvall in The Shining.)

Pushing Boundaries
Mainstream director Milos Forman always said that casting was the most important aspect of the filmmaking process. He would spend months trying to find exactly the right person for every role, because then once cameras started to roll, he knew that they’d match his vision perfectly and project exactly the right tone. MissaX and All Her Luv are equally skilled at casting. The three leads in Pushing Boundaries seem born for the roles they play: Kenna James, all sweetness and light, as the innocent stepdaughter; Ryan Mclane charming but feckless as the well-meaning stepdad; and Mona Wales as a wife whose eyes bespeak the million naughty urges swimming beneath the surface. Kenna’s return home provides an irresistible temptation for Mona, particularly when Kenna witlessly teases her by doing a yoga routine in full view. Will Mona take both Kenna and Ryan down a path of pleasure none could have imagined? Without revealing too many of the movie’s secrets, it winds up in memorable fashion with an outdoor threesome (a scene we featured in an August edition of our blog series “Best Porn Scenes“).

The Producer
What exactly does a movie producer do? Well, you probably wouldn’t want to take the example of Cadence Lux‘s character to form your definition of the term. Though she’s clearly talented, she also has a habit of turning her shoots into a way of expressing and satisfying her own latent (and not-so-latent) desires. Her partner, Vera King, sees this, yet she has also become accustomed to the luxury that the big-ticket producer job provides. Five scenes of lesbian lust steal the spotlight, of course, but there are interesting meta-messages about the nature of the movie business lurking in and around the action, too. Lux, one of the most wonderfully watchable stars in the All Her Luv stock company, is splendid here, taking on the producer role with focus and gusto, so much so that the movie inspired a sequel.
