VICE Tracks the Return of Bush
Fully shaven? Landing strip? Hair, hair everywhere? There are plenty of options for hair care south of the belt line, but in porn, completely bare seems like the default. Maybe it’s time to stop stropping your razor, though, because VICE sees full bush making a return in a big way.
“Hair has actually made a significant comeback in the industry. That very well may be because it’s back in the culture at large as well,” said VICE contributor Mark Hay. “But as hair down there creeps back into the mainstream of pornography, it could serve as an aid to help decrease the pressure to go hairless among everyday people.”
Carter Cruise was among the first stars to buck the hairless trend, but nowadays she finds she has lots of company. “I like it. I might trim it down a little bit at some point. It’s pretty crazy right now. When I first grew it out, no one had a bush but now everyone’s growing bush. So it’s not original anymore. It’s very competitive,” she told Adult DVD Talk.
One thing that remains mysterious is why the industry and culture at large rejected pubic hair in the first place. When Dalene Kurtis appeared fully shaven in Playboy in 2001, she was the first-ever Playmate to do so, but before long, a bare bush became the trend in Playboy and porn alike. VICE’s Hay theorizes that the vogue might boil down to several possible reasons: the shaved look looking better on camera because it reveals intimate details, an attempt at being more hygienic, or an obsession with the idea of youth, among other explanations. Though VICE sees a return of the full bush days of yore, others suggest that a middle ground might be a better option. In a post from January 2016, Adult Empire guest blogger Coleen noted: “When it comes to men and their dicks, I advocate the middle path. Not unkempt and yet, not creepily clean like some weird baby child. I rue the day when this trend becomes mainstream and we’re bombarded with shaved dicks everywhere. Till then, I am a one woman army on a mission to keep the shaver as far away from a penis as I can!”
The recent porn sequel Adventures with the Baumgartners also found itself blazing down the middle path. In the movie’s opening scene, Edyn Blair starts out with a generous patch of hair that is then sensually shaved down to a landing strip by Anikka Albrite. There are plenty of themed porn series that pack all their scenes with bush-centric action, but if VICE is correct, such movies might soon be the norm rather than the exception. (That said, VICE always has a contrarian bent and a gleeful inclination to put their thumb in the eye of convention. This is the same organization that once waxed poetic about “The Enduring and Erotic Power of Quicksand Porn,” after all. If there’s anything to be learned from a career in porn, it’s that sex trends are difficult to predict.)
