Nina Hartley on the Universal Language of Touch
Touch can have healing properties, Nina Hartley says, and if anyone would know, it’d be her! Hartley has been in the industry since 1984, shooting hundreds of scenes, and every single one of them involved touching, and plenty of it. In recent years, Hartley has scaled back her shooting schedule and restyled herself as a sex educator. The latest manifestation of this second career is a recent interview with the Huffington Post, in which Hartley discusses the transformative powers of touch.
Hartley thinks of touch as something that unifies the human experience. “Touch is a universal language because it’s how we communicate before and beyond spoken words,” she told interviewer Sandra LaMorgese. “When someone touches our skin through massaging, playing, hugging, handholding, or having physical sex, we begin to experience physiological and physical healing. The same goes for doing porn.”
The scenes Hartley has shot are examples of these healing powers. “All of my scenes are very intentional, even when I work with someone only once,” Hartley noted “It’s stealth healing. I strive to make my partners feel easy, comfortable, sexy, desirable, competent, safe, and seen. I don’t think I’m on anyone’s ‘No’ list (and every porn star has one).”
Naturally, during sex, touch is a key aspect, both in obvious and not-so-obvious ways. “Touch during sex is how we communicate to our partners that they matter, that we’re paying attention, that we want them, that we welcome them, and that we won’t hurt them. An orgasm is a momentary chemical/physical release that we can do on our own, but making love with a partner allows us, hopefully, to feel safe and loved and to communicate the same to our partner,” Hartley said.
