Kross-roads: ‘Misha Cross Wide Open’ (Plus Autograph Offer!)

Misha Cross Wide Open starts with a challenge.

Misha Cross is half-heartedly listening to Kayden Kross read a fairy tale. Kayden’s voice is muffled, and Misha seems distant and disengaged as she playfully licks a lollipop. When Kayden reaches the obligatory final chorus of “happily ever after,” naive Misha challenges Kayden to tell her a story that doesn’t stop there, that doesn’t play along with the idea that everything always works out. She wants a story that “doesn’t end before the roller coaster starts to drop.” Kayden is up to the challenge, and the balance of the film is the sultry story that she tells Misha.

Storytelling isn’t the only challenge Kayden is meeting head on. Misha Cross Wide Open represents a bold new step for the popular star, a fusion of her creative energy and that of her partner and co-director, Manuel Ferrara. His established gonzo style of directing merges with the script, set-up, and featured performance of Kayden herself, who transitions with ease into a project that demands her talents in a variety of domains.

The movie also demonstrates that Kayden isn’t above sharing the limelight with an up-and-coming newbie, namely Misha Cross, whose combination of innocence and sensuality functions as the movie’s primary focus and through line. It will hardly comes as a surprise to learn that as the movie progresses (after Kayden’s sexually charged story, which features Misha as the primary character) Misha and Kayden find themselves exploring their attraction. In addition to handling co-directing chores for the film, Manuel Ferrara also appears in front of the camera as the third member of the movie’s romantic triangle.
