Strap-Ons Are For ‘Everyone’

To the uninitiated, strap-ons look a little scary, but there’s no reason to be afraid.

Or at least that’s the message conveyed by Tino Dietrich and Adult Empire’s Chelsea McCain in a recent article from Refinery29. Both McCain and Dietrich believe that strap-ons can be a fun addition to anyone’s sexual repertoire, and not just in the classic girl-on-girl scenarios the toys are probably most famous for.

In fact, McCain sees the strap-on as a tool for pleasure and empowerment alike. “You are learning to use a product attached to you to please someone, male or female, that you aren’t used to having, and once you get in the groove, IT’S ON!” she told Refinery29. “Believe me, you feel empowered! To this day, when I think of a strap on, no matter what style, that’s what I think of: empowerment.”

The key to fun strap-on play comes down to several areas, according to McCain and Refinery29: communication, finding the right size of toy, discovering the ideal position for you and your partner, using lube as needed, treating the toy as an extension of yourself, knowing how to use the toy in different contexts, and (of course) staying safe. “You don’t want to be fumbling around with the toy while wearing it, and you sure don’t want to take on more than you or your partner can chew,” McCain noted. “Both you and your partner should look into interesting positions. Inform each other of what you want to try, and speak openly sexually when in use on how deep, fast, and so on.”
