Belle Knox Will Be the Subject of a New TV Biopic
College tuition isn’t cheap, but there are many ways to pay the bills. Some students take on work study jobs; others fight for scholarships; still others take on massive student loans and hope a successful career will quickly pay them down. Miriam Weeks (aka Belle Knox) found herself in the same tricky financial situation, and her solution to the problem created controversy at her alma mater Duke in 2014: she became a pornstar. Her shocking story is now poised to debut as a Lifetime movie of the week, slated to premiere Saturday night.
Lifetime summarizes the movie’s plot this way: “Inspired by a true story, From Straight A’s to XXX tells the story of Miriam Weeks (Haley Pullos, General Hospital), a college freshman at Duke University who turns to porn in order to pay for her tuition expenses. But when a male student discovers who she is and exposes her secret, Miriam is faced with an onslaught of death threats and cyber-bullying. The film also stars Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), Sasha Clements (Majority Rules!) and Jessica Lu (Awkward).”
The movie faces the obvious problem of entering the world of porn without actually being able to show anything truly explicit. Knox’s story seems a little better suited to HBO or Showtime, which wouldn’t have to elide any of the hardcore details, but Lifetime is famous wringing all the soap opera drama out of saucy controversies such as this. The IMDB cast list includes a listing for “Mean Porn Girl #1” (does that mean there is also a “Mean Porn Girl #2” in there somewhere?), so it sounds like Lifetime’s take on the story doesn’t hold back on cattiness.
Knox’s story has been indirectly dramatized before, in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. “Pornstar Requiem” gave the basic outline of Knox’s controversy a darker twist and changed the names of the principle characters. Meanwhile, the real Knox has had a much lower profile in the past two years and as of 2015 was attempting to break into politics.
