Bidding Farewell: How Pornstars Said Goodbye to Porn

This week, Barack Obama bid farewell to the presidency with one final address to the nation. “The song is over; it’s all behind me,” as The Who sang in a memorable cut from their 1971 album Who’s Next. There’s something poetic about a sweet, sad farewell. Why else have there been so many songs, poems, movies and books about that very subject? When pornstars decide to say farewell to their careers, they’ve chosen numerous means of announcing the news and saying goodbye.

Mainstream press (Mia Khalifa)

“How do you fake DNA?” ponders a character in David Mamet’s Spartan. “You don’t fake DNA,” responds an official. “You issue a press release.” The press has a powerful way of shaping the narrative, and several pornstars have been wily enough to harness that capability with skill and precision. Mia Khalifa‘s retirement was announced by no less an authority than the Washington Post, which has given Khalifa quite a bit of coverage since. (Then again, this is the same organization that gave us the political nickname Deep Throat, so maybe we shouldn’t be all that surprised.)

Blog post (Remy LAcroix)

Many stars maintain personal blogs, allowing a forum for musings about life and the industry. And when it comes time to say goodbye to porn, it’s the perfect spot to announce it and explain why. Remy LaCroix recently chose this route, explaining her reasons for leaving porn and giving hints as to what career path she planned to pursue next. Karmen Karma also summed up the reasons for her retirement in a web post (as is often the case, it involved a new romance in her life): “As you probably are aware, I am married to the man of my dreams. I have been extremely fortunate in the fact he does not have a controlling or jealous bone in his body. He has never once asked nor expected me to retire from pornography however I personally want my body to be devoted to only him. I have a brand new chapter starting in my life and I have just simply grown out of the appetite to do porn.”

Video announcement (SIRI)

In this era of smartphones, it’s easier than ever to make and post a selfie video. Just pull out your phone, hit record, click “send,” and voila! Numerous pornstars have opted for this intimate and personal means of saying goodbye to their porn careers. Siri, the busty star who won the hearts of many fans during her brief but memorable career, appeared on camera in a sober, serious tone to tell “Sirians” that she was done with porn. “I always said that I would quit when it stopped being fun,” she noted. “Things got to a point where they stopped being fun. I stopped enjoying what I was doing.” Other stars who have announced their retirements via YouTube video have included Bibi Jones and Jenna Haze.

Twitter (LExi Belle)

Twitter may lag behind Facebook in terms of growth and overall members, but it still rules the roost when it comes to shaping the public conversation. It is a particularly powerful venue for adult entertainment, and an increasing number of stars have revealed their porn retirements with a series of tweets. Dakota‘s temporary retirement from porn was announced with a simple “I retired btw” tweet, but others have opted for the classic “tweet storm.” Lexi Belle chose this route when she officially retired last year, summing up her reasons for moving on and closing with the aphorism “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

Facebook (Lisa Ann)

Facebook is not a very friendly place for porn, but many stars have still managed to carve out a niche on the popular site. Lisa Ann boasts over 800,000 Facebook likes, and she chose to announce her retirement with a Facebook pic of a handwritten note:

Thank you for all the years I have been able to live out my sexual fantasies through fulfilling ours. I have learned who I am sexually by the challenges you have presented me. I also thank you for the amount of years I have been able to be successful in the adult industry as I know it.

Her Facebook page was later revamped and renamed to reflect Ann’s new career as a guru of fantasy sports.

Vanishing Act (Bambi Woods)

Some pornstars end their careers in such a way that they seem less retirement and more Unsolved Mysteries segment. Debbie Does Dallas star Bambi Woods made her mark long before social media helped normalize pornstars as a part of popular culture, so she didn’t have the array of venues used by modern stars like Lisa Ann. Her defacto retirement and complete disappearance from the public eye have baffled fans for three decades. She vanished from the scene in the 1980s and was later the victim of several hoax explanations for her absence, including a debunked 2005 claim that she died in 1986 of a drug overdose. Bambi, if you want to come out of retirement to write a tell-all AE blog post about where you’ve been all these years, we certainly wouldn’t say no.
