Asa Akira Refocuses As She Enters Her 30s
You wouldn’t think of Asa Akira as someone past her peak, but that’s just how the star describes herself. In a new interview with AVN, Asa characterizes herself as “definitely past my peak, just past it,” referring to her dual triumphs of an AVN Performer of the Year win in 2013 and the ensuing publication of her book Insatiable. What’s left to accomplish after career-defining successes like that? Plenty! The star is far from finished and is taking her career in a mature but exciting direction as she enters her 30s, including an upcoming new book and a new featured role for Brad Armstrong.
“I turned 30 this year, which doesn’t sound old in the real world,” Akira said, “but as a female porn star I definitely feel the weight of my age . . . I think in porn, we almost age in dog years. I mean 30 is really old in porn years.” She describes her as-yet-untitled book, set to be published by Cleis Press after inking a recent deal, as “more of a coming-of-age book than the first one. I feel like I’ve matured a lot in the last couple years.”
For Asa, writing comes as naturally as performing does. “I wake up at 6 in the morning and I write for two hours,” she said. “The first book coming out affected my life a lot more than I imagined it would. I love sharing things, I like telling stories—it was just an extension of that. I didn’t set out to write anything … for lack of a better word, political.”
Asa isn’t spending all of her time in front of a word processor though, even as she reshapes her career. “By no means am I ready to leave the industry—I’m still having too much fun as a performer … but is life after porn going to be enough for me? … I consider myself so lucky to be able to do this for a living. Am I going to miss this when I leave?”
Akira’s next major performance will be in the Wicked Pictures blockbuster Starmaker, directed by Brad Armstrong, and her book is slated for release next year.
